Fertilisation

Fertilisation

Yew is a plant that needs nutrition to stay beautifully green. If the fertiliser dose is too low, the plant will not grow sufficiently and the needles will turn a dull yellow colour. A distinction should be made between fertilisation in the open air and fertilisation in pots. All our recommendations are based on experience gained in professional nurseries and are based on average values.

To give exact advice, you should have a soil analysis carried out. The type of soil is also very decisive: loamy or clay soils require less nutrition than sandy soils.

Compound fertilisers consist of different nutritional elements. Nitrogen (N), phosphate (P) and potassium (K) are the main elements. You will find the formula on the packaging. For yew, magnesium(MgO) is also important because it promotes a nice green colour. When using seaweed lime, you also add the necessary trace elements at the same time.

Fertilisation in open field

For the private garden enthusiast, there are several systems:

Fertilisation with organic fertilisers:

These fertilisers are made from organic raw materials and are soft-working (low risk of burning). The average duration of action is 6 to 8 weeks. Therefore, several fertiliser applications per year are required.

  • april: 10-15 kg/are(100m2)
  • half june: 5-10kg/are
  • august: 5kg/are

These fertilisers do not need to be worked in. Extra magnesium in this fertiliser ensures a beautiful green colour.

sample formula: 7-5-7+ 2MgO

Fertilisation with coated fertilisers:

These granules are coated so that the nutrients are released slowly (no risk of burning). These fertilisers are environmentally friendly as few nutrients leach into the groundwater. The duration of action is 5 to 6 months depending on the formula chosen. One fertilisation a year will suffice in most cases. If necessary, a light top-up can be applied in August.
March/April: 7kg /are
if needed August: 3 kg/are
example: Agromaster 5-6 months 15-8-16+ 5%MgO.

Fertilisation in pots:

Professional nurseries use mainly coated Osmocote fertilisers for growing in pots. Thanks to the special resin coating, the nutrients are released gradually so that plants have sufficient nutrition throughout the growing season. Growth will therefore be uniform. Depending on the chosen formula, the duration of action is about 6 months, so that in most cases one fertilisation a year is sufficient.

As this fertiliser has virtually no leaching, it is efficient and environmentally friendly.
March/April: 30 grams per 10 litres pot volume (loose grains)
or 4 tablets of 7.5gr/10 pot volume(tablet form)
example: Osmocote
